Toast Points

  1. Hi Toasties, I hope you've all had a fun week. I can't believe it's August tomorrow -- this summer is FLYING BY. My dad is having surgery next week and my husband is switching jobs and my preschooler is switching schools and we are soon to have houseguests for 5-7 days and then all the back-to-school busy-ness really kicks in, so I have been floundering a bit. I'm ready for the weekend! I'm ready to at…

  2. Hi Toasties, how was your week? Did you do anything exciting? Yesterday I talked to some grad students about this job, and I was nervous at first but it was actually really fun. Of course I said lots of nice things about all of you. I also realized, during the conversation, that my one-year Toast-versary is coming up pretty soon. If you've been wondering what to get me, I like expensive jewelry and homemade popsicles and John Cho gifs…

  3. Friends, I don't know about you, but my heart has still not recovered from Abbey Fenbert's perfect piece about Wishbone. Some crew members from the series happened upon the post and have been sharing show anecdotes in the comments, SUCH AS: <3 <3 would read an entire biography about Soccer and his career, does one exist yet <3 <3

  4. Mallory didn't watch the World Cup final last weekend (I DID), but she did watch The Rock's motivational pre-game message to the team.

  5. Nikki has been gone for four days and thus far I have forgotten to do social sharing two days in a row and napped through the first twenty minutes of an important work phone call. I CANNOT BE LEFT ALONE WITHOUT AT LEAST TWO NICOLES TO HOLD ME UP AT ALL TIMES.

  6. Carvell Wallace's letter to his late mother following the murders in Charleston:

Today, they killed nine people in an AME church. And I’m glad you’re not here because you’d just be shaking your head and clucking low and quiet, calling on Jesus’ name. You’d be asking what the world was coming to. You’d call Aunt Shirley and Aunt Bev and the three of you would repeat the same things over and over. It’s

  7. Hey Toast, what did you all do this week? I took twelve little Daisy Scouts bowling yesterday afternoon and I SURVIVED, so high fives all around. I also learned just how slow a bowling ball can roll without ever...actually...stopping...or traveling backwards? It was loud but great fun, and I've really enjoyed being a troop leader this year. I only thought about the Pete & Pete "Rolling Thunder" episode a couple of times while we were…

  8. Hi Toast-friends, how was your week? Mine has been fun, a week for reconnecting with old friends -- on Monday night I got together with my friend Amy, who I had not seen in so many years that we just agreed from the outset not to even talk about it/how old we are now, and tonight I'm hoping to reunite with a friend who left the area for school and has since returned. It was also a…

  9. Hey Toasties, what are you up to this fine Friday afternoon? I'm looking for good summer cocktail recipes, because I like the idea of sipping summer cocktails on my screened-in porch. If you have a favorite, maybe tell me about it in the comments, and maybe I'll learn to make it this very weekend.

This was a short week that felt very very long to me. It was a good week, though!

  10. Hey Toasters, hope you had a good week! What are you reading as you head into the holiday weekend? I am finishing Trip by our own Mindy Hung, and I'm about halfway through One Thing Stolen by my friend and thesis adviser Beth Kephart. I've got a road trip this weekend and am thinking of loading up the Kindle before I go, so feel free to drop your best recs in the comments.

  11. Toasties! How was your week? Mine was certainly A Week, and I am ready to move on. Some excellent things happened around here, though; they always seem to. On to the Toast Points!

  12. How was everyone's week? Mine was excellent. I met Sulagna on Sunday and spent a great day museum-hopping with her and our lovely friend Rachel, which was a fantastic way to kick off My Birth Week. Tuesday was my actual birthday and it was one of the best, I must say (even though Mallory trolled me with this the morning of). …

  13. 14. Yesterday my daughter went to work with her dad for Take Your Child to Work Day (which USED to be Take Your DAUGHTER to Work Day; I don't know exactly what happened there because I pretty much try to ignore parent in-fighting, but I just assume there were some bullshit charges of "reverse sexism" involved?). I was a little hurt that she didn't want to come to work with ME.

  15. Hello Toasties! I hope you've all had a magnificent week. Mine felt like a week full of Mondays, because that's how your week feels when you come back from the beach, but as always it was impossible not to revel in the many delights of The Toast:
