This Guy On An Old Harry Potter Forum Says Dumbledore Is A Time-Traveling Ron Weasley And I Want To Hear Him Out -The Toast

Home: The Toast

crazyI do not remember offhand what I was doing for the entirety of 2004; playing a bit of indifferent tennis on the William Fremd frosh/soph high school team, to be sure; carefully nursing a hallway crush that necessitated careful class-navigation strategizing; rollerblading to Subway with my friend Emily a lot, because we both really enjoyed Subway. I think I worked at Portillo’s that summer, but I can’t be entirely certain. What I most assuredly was not doing, unfortunately, was learning about the “Dumbledore is a time-traveling Ron Weasley” on Harry Potter fan forums.

But I could have done. For nigh on ten years, this theory has been kept from me, until I stumbled across it quite inadvertently on the eve of this new year. Let’s hear this out, my heart cried within me. Let the man speakLet him produce evidence; let us judge the merits of his argument, unfettered by bias or prejudice.

(Did you know about this? Did you keep this from me? Were you, in short, afraid?)

Ron, our loyal Knight, will become a time traveler. He will be sent back in time to some point in the 19th century to live out the rest of his days at Albus Dumbledore, our venerable King. The exact mechanics of his journey in time are unclear, though we do believe it is unavoidable, and that it will in fact be the very move that enables Harry’s eventual defeat of Voldemort (the checkmate) and that it will also have something to do with the White Queen (Bellatrix). Though you may think us a couple of nutters for making such an outrageous claim, we do indeed have evidence. Lots and lots of evidence.

I am properly strapped in. I have read the precautionary materials; I have no known heart conditions and am neither a pregnant nor a nursing mother. All of my arms and legs are safely inside the vehicle. I am ready to go on this ride with you.

1. Uncanny Resemblance

We often joke about how unobservant Harry is, and though he hasn’t made the connection we have, he does indeed dutifully describe for us both Ron and Dumbledore’s appearance. Harry describes both Ron and Dumbledore as tall, thin and possessing a long nose (though Dumbledore’s has been broken a couple of times). These three characteristics are repeated by Harry when he meets either of these two characters for the first time in almost every book.

Dumbledore is described as having long fingers, while Ron is described as having large hands and feet. Unless Ron is a mutant, having large hands would also mean having long fingers. Dumbledore is very, very old with white hair when we first meet him, but when Harry visits a fifty years younger Dumbledore in Riddle’s diary, he is described as having auburn hair. In other words, Dumbledore was once a redhead just like Ron. While we know Dumbledore has sparkling blue eyes, JKR has very curiously neglected to have Harry mention Ron’s eye color for five whole books now. We know nearly everyone else’s eye color, including Arthur Weasley’s (blue), but we don’t know that of Harry’s best friend.

Dumbledore’s one other key characteristic, the scar above his left knee, is mentioned in the first chapter of PS/SS. While Harry hasn’t noticed any tell tale scars shaped like the London Underground on Ron, we do indeed know from PoA that Ron has sustained a serious injury to his left leg. Though JKR curiously, and very pointedly, dances around which leg exactly it is that Ron has broken, we have determined that it is indeed his left leg. When Sirius conjures the manacles and attaches Peter to Ron and Lupin, he attaches Peter to Ron’s left side. If you are injured and using only one crutch, you would, of course, use the crutch on the side of your injured leg. Sirius shackled Peter to Ron’s injured side – his left.

Unless Ron is a mutant. Ron is most assuredly not a mutant; but he may very well be a long-fingered time-traveler. Are you trying to claim that Ron Weasley, cheerful wizard-lad, is a mutant of some kind? That is a ridiculous claim; you have nothing to back up this assertion. He has big hands; it follows necessarily that he has long fingers. He is not a mutant.

But that is not all… In the last chapter of PS/SS, Dumbledore tells Harry that he lost his taste for Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans after eating a vomit flavored bean in his youth. There is one problem with this… Bertie Bott was born in 1935. While Dumbledore is over 150 years old, and for him, ‘youth’ is a relative term, he could not have possibly eaten a Bertie Bott Every Flavor Bean until the 1950’s, most likely even later, making him well over a hundred years old. Even in Dumbledore terms this is hardly his ‘youth’. Before anyone makes the brilliant observation that the Bertie Bott card isn’t canon, be sure to read the statement from Wizards of the Coast concerning their collaboration with JK Rowling on the making of the cards posted to The Leaky Cauldron.

THIS MAKES SENSE TO ME. Can you explain this? Your rebuttal of this theory must include this. The Every Flavor beans are the smoking gun.

4. Foreshadowing

Ron makes it very clear on several occasions that he hates the color maroon. Could it be because he will eventually be ‘marooned’ in time?

Yes.

Socks are a running theme throughout the series. They are used as symbols of freedom, redemption and love. Ron, however, doesn’t ever really fully appreciate the socks his mother gives him. In PoA, he tosses them aside to gush over Harry’s Firebolt. In GoF, he gives his Christmas socks to Dobby. Socks are also seen attached to Molly specifically – she is seen fussing over socks, looking for socks, folding socks, packing socks. And if Molly wasn’t mother figure enough, Tonks tells Harry her own mother has this special knack for magically folding socks. In fact, the first time we see Harry, he is in his cupboard, looking for a pair of socks (though he has to knock the spiders off of them, not having a mother to fuss over them for him). Dobby is set free with a sock. Hermione knits socks for the house elves. Dumbledore, the man who clearly has all of the fame, power, respect, possessions and wisdom one could hope for in a lifetime, sees himself holding a pair of wooly socks in the Mirror of Erised. If you read this scene with Dumbledore being Ron in mind, it takes on a whole new and really huge significance Ron indeed becomes greater than all of his brothers, yet as an old man, he is still wistful for those socks his mother gave him and he never fully appreciated.

This man has thought more carefully and considerately about the use of socks in the Harry Potter books than you have ever thought about anything your miserable and lumpen-headed life. You disgust me. Dumbledore is a time-traveling Ron, and I hate your insipid, moony face.

In OotP, Draco composes a lovely song – Weasley is Our King. If that isn’t foreshadowing, I don’t know what is. One line in particular is given significance by Draco. He is heard singing it loudly during the game by Harry, and Draco later quotes it in italics – born in a bin. While Draco likes to make fun of Ron’s poverty, the phrase has a double meaning. ‘Bin’ is also a prefix meaning ‘double’ or ‘two’ – think ‘binary’. Was Ron ‘born’ twice? Leading a double life? Is Draco trying to tell us something important?

THAT’S FUCKING LATIN MOTHERFUCKERS

In OotP, Ron is nearly strangled by some purple wizard robes while cleaning up Grimmauld Place. Who do we know wears purple robes? Dumbledore, of course.

I don’t even know what this means but I love your commitment and I am so all about this journey we are taking together and yes I said yes I will Yes.

I feel the need to point out that it wasn't one dude with this plan, it was two women! I was only LJ friends with one of them at the time though

AHhhh, I remember this theory! If I remember correctly, JK Rowling actually debunked it in an interview because it gained so much traction in the fandom! YES ETA I found a copy/paste on a forum about it by googling "JKR debunks Knight2King" (I was so invested in this theory for a bit there) and found the text from her site FAQ (which got eaten up when she redesigned her site to be all flash-based stuff).

JKR: These theories open up exhilarating new vistas of possibility… but they’re wrong. Could it be that by speculating that Harry/Ron becomes Dumbledore, you are seeking reassurance that neither dies young? I’ve also heard a whisper about Ron and Hermione’s son time-travelling, so I shall go further and tell you that NONE of the characters in the books has returned from the future. As for the idea of Ron and Hermione having a son… (chuckles as the distant roars of a million shippers reach my ears, all cursing me to an eternity of unsatisfied curiosity).

Sometimes with regard to her stuff I think Fandom does it better anyway. That epilogue was way too neat. /subscribes to the "Harry has PTSD and becomes a lonely alcoholic" school of thought

I'm not a huge Harry potter fan but I totally buy this! I appreciate you bringing this to our collective attention, Mallory!
Perhaps prior to being sent back in time, Ronbledore promises Hermione that he will never love another woman. Thus, his need to love and be loved combined with his stalwart loyalty led to a diversion in orientation. (Dumbledore being gay, and whatnot.)

I feel like The Deathly Hallows pokes too many holes in this theory. Although I do love it quite a lot.

I always liked that theory, even though I knew it was unlikely. There was this other theory that I knew would never happen, what with the rules of narrative and all, but that was incredibly well-argued: that McGonagall was evil. I'll see if I can find and link it after work (unless someone else beats me to it).

In to say I noticed the Ulysses shout-out before the rest of the English majors here (no mean feat as I would estimate that English majors comprise about 80% of The Toast's readership).

But Dumbledore had parents and a living brother and where would this leave the Weasley parents...and...and...

Oh who am I to start with reason about any of this? If J.K. Rowling couldn't avoid continuity errors in her own story then neither can we.
i am totally prepared to devote myself wholeheartedly to this theory

i will follow you anywhere, internet randos and Maurice who is NOT crazy, just eccentric, this is a sensitive topic since the whole Gaston blackmail thing, can you guys maybe be a little considerate?
CAN THIS BE A SERIES??

I would really love to read Mallory just unearthing old HP fan theories, mainly because I was the rare HP superfan who adamantly stayed away from fandom speculations so my reading experiences of the books could be "pure". And yes, I was awful.

I don't remember what I was doing in 2004, except wholeheartedly subscribing to this theory and reading Neville/Ginny fanfic.

What I was doing in 2004: reading this theory and then quoting the bit about socks a lot.
DUMBLERON
DUMBLERON
DOES WHATEVER A DUMBLERON CAN
CAN HE TRAVEL
BACK IN TIME
YES HE CAN
HE'S A WIZARD

this is one of the most beloved, treasured, whackadoo things to come out of Harry Potter fandom, ever.

I would add to this theory that Dumbledore never pays much attention to Ron - perhaps b/c he doesn't want to unwittingly influence his younger self - which would mess up... something something. Right?
This is my favorite of the crazy HP theories! I was also rather enamored of the "Ron is a Seer" theory, which relied on a lot of Ron's off-handed jokes and one-liners coming true, and a somewhat elaborate backstory involving a tragically dead Weasley child born in between Charlie and Percy that could make Ron the seventh son of a seventh son, which would obviously make him a seer.

Oh man, you guys, 2004-2006 was a GOLDEN AGE in HP fandom. I miss it, ship wars and all!
I feel like that, starting with this post, we can Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius this theory into being true.

"it will also have something to do with the White Queen (Bellatrix)" sorry I read the words "Queen" and "Bellatrix" and got too distracted to absorb anything else. alas googling for further information mostly turned up Bellatrix/Hermione fanfiction ("alas" she says, opening a new incognito window)

also, mallory, fremd as in the fremd vikings? as in noted rivals of palatine high school fremd?

Yes yes yes. I love crack theories. You should see some of the ones for ASOIAF.

While this theory was definitely a little bonkers, I like it better than the "Ron is secretly evil" theory... which I still maintain was cooked up by Harry/Hermione fans who just wanted to run a smear campaign on Ron's character.

This has always hands down been my favorite HP theory, I'm so pleased to see it revisited here! Can we just delve right back into the old HP fan stuff?? Hogwarts/Giant Squid! Leather pants Draco!! MY IMMORTAL.

This is going in my head-canon, along with the fact that Hermione is the direct descendent of the magically conceived love-child of all four Hogwarts founders (think about it, she demonstrates the traits of all four Houses: courage, intelligence, loyalty, and ambition) and is destined to become The One Who Will Bring Balance to the Hogwarts and merge all four Houses into The Most Harmonious House of Granger (she keeps her last name).

Also Neville Longbottom is the true Heir of Slytherin (he's pureblood, and WHAT KIND OF ANIMAL HAS A LONG BOTTOM: SNAKES. Boom).

My friend on Facebook just made a very good point:

"Can't believe the guy missed that one of Albus' middle names is Percival as in Percy Weasley as in Ron's brother and prodigal redeemed son of the Weasleys!"

Ok now Im all nostalgic for all the bananas HP theories. Sigh.
I still love this theory because Ron is my favorite character and I do not feel he gets enough respect from the fandom.
As a dedicated Snapledore shipper, I was never able to get behind this theory.

And time travel fics in general always give me a headache -- NO HERMIONE DON'T FALL DOWN THE STAIRS WITH THE TIME TURNER AGAIN FOR CHRIST'S SAKE BE CAREFUL WITH THAT THING.
In 2004 (or around there) my brother and I got lost in the woods because while walking with our parents, my brother and I just kept talking about Harry Potter theories until we realized that we'd lost them.

We didn't care much because we were busy dissecting how UTTERLY useless Ginny Weasley seemed. All of which was justified in the later books.
As much as I love this, didn't Hermione knit hats for the house elves, not socks?

Also, for the last hour or so, I have not been able to stop with the "LeFou, I'm afraid I've been thinking / A dangerous pastime! / I know..."
I love HP internet theories almost as much as I love HP internet dramaz. We should have a whole series of posts dedicated to all the fandom drama of the early 2000s. They are so beautiful I want to cry tears of everlasting joy when I re-read them.

Oliver Stone needs to make a Harry Potter movie ASAP
I wish I could go back in time to the many summers I spent reading fanfiction for 12 hours straight.

If one wants to read good post-Deathly Hallows fic where does one go? Is FictionAlley still a thing? LJ? Not Tumblr right? Because Tumblr terrifies me.

A friend I forwarded this to replied: "My main problem with that post is that it wasn’t 4x longer."
Did anyone else lurk at La Société des Femmes Dangereuses? In retrospect, as a community it had a lot of Toastesque characteristics.

I have to say that sock section is almost embarrassingly persuasive.
This is beautiful. Please do the alchemy one about Harry and Hermione next.
I miss HP fandom so much.

Sorry if someone already posted this, but while I could be totally convinced just on the snippet about the socks, there is one overall, massive problem: Dumbledore was gay, per JK (http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/2007/10/20/j-k-rowling-at-carnegie-hall-reveals-dumbledore-is-gay-neville-marries-hannah-abbott-and-scores-more). Ron marries Hermione....soo,....I'm still stuck on that.

Anybody else STILL MAD that Luna and Harry don't end up together, holding each other's gaping, broken minds together at the seams?
Ginny/Hermione, Harry/Luna, Ron/muggleprofessionalathlete. I'd also accept Ron/Harry/Hermione, or Draco/Hermione,
But...but...what about Aberforth and Ariana??

Although I don't buy into this...I'll be your huckleberry for a moment...I haven't seen anyone bring up the relevance of the gift Dumbledore leaves Ron in his will...the Deluminator. As it was of Dumbledore's own design/creation. And that Dumbledore knew Ron would leave but knew he would want to come back. And the light going inside him...maybe symbolically illustrating Dumbledore and Ron as one.
Two months later, I'm very glad that plenty of people took this so seriously because I mean Mallory's tone was EXTREMELY serious and I wouldn't want anyone to upset her.
