Serious question: do you have to watch Evil Dead before watching Evil Dead II, or does it stand alone? Because only the second one is currently streaming and I can’t believe I’ve never seen either before and need to correct this immediately.

I will go, but I’m convinced I will die of a heart attack at some point during that weekend.
Yeah, go ahead and watch. The first act functions as a speedy reprise of the main plot from the first film, so you won’t really miss out on any story.
Evil Dead II essentially acts both as a sequel and as a remake of the first one. I saw II and Army of Darkness before I ever saw the original, and I came out just fine. You know, more or less.
Also — and you guys know I don’t generally go in for spoilers or trigger warnings in general, but I think it’s fair to be prewarned about this — there is a pretty bonkers and in my opinion ill-advised scene in the original Evil Dead where a female character gets, um, raped by demonic trees that is WISELY CUT from Evil Dead II.
So Evil Dead II is vastly superior in that sense.
Yeah, unfortunately they put the demonic tree rape scene back in the remake and it is SO MUCH WORSE.
That Farewell to Arms gag is brilliant. I might have to watch this movie I’ve been told to watch since I was 15 or something crazy like that.
Your friends did you no favors by not forcing you, Alex-Delarge-like, to see Evil Dead II.
