Pure Joy. Thanks.
While we’re at it, let’s add Homer’s Mexican Hat Dance to the mix. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGx632Blq3U
I clicked play. I clicked view on YouTube. It didn’t play. I began to question if this was a prank because why was nothing happening. And I realized that it was just a static picture of Homer, no moving video, and my speakers were turned all the way down.
it’s going to be that sort of day.
Best. Tags. EVER.
but what if I AM willing to give in to nihilism
Day 100% better!
I needed this before my unsuccessful missions this morning.
I think I gave into nihilism in October.
Fall is a good time to be a nihilist.
Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people’s hats off- then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can.
Melville gets fall.
Also, A+ idea to deliberately step into the street and methodically knock people’s hats off.
Truly, timeless advice, and definitely the immediate predecessor to taking to the sea.
that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people’s hats off
This would be me if more people habitually wore hats.
Move to, like, Brooklyn or something.
Probably best not to put temptation in my way. I have a hard enough time as it is, when my mood is particularly low, not lashing out at people on the Tube, and they are usually hatless.
YES. Co-signed. Although for me, it’s the desert not the sea, but otherwise, yes!!
THIS. But instead of the sea, it’s London, and I have to scheme like hell to make my job pay for it.
Most things in life can be improved with a jaunty brass quartet backing track.
Yep “upbeat near-nihilism” is 100% my current mood. A+ work.
usually cheerful nihilism is my go-to emotion, but it’s been a hard day for it so far. did YOU steal it for this article, Ortberg?
I choose a different route:
WOO-WOOP WOOP WOOP WOOP

Being at work right now means I can’t actually watch this, but I am imagining it and it is comforting me greatly. Thanks, Mallory, I needed that. (I am going to be at work until 8pm and have to be in at 8.30 tomorrow morning. I am very tired and just want to go to bed and not do anything, and I can’t for several hours. Also, there are loads of fireworks going off outside, as it is the 5th of November, which is not helping my mood.)
P.S. – I know there was a post a while ago about the Simpsons song “Checking In”. I cannot find it, however hard I search. I get the song in my head whenever I am checking new library acquisitions in (so, daily) and not being able to find the piece makes me feel like I’m losing my mind. Link, anyone?
Here it is! It’s not tagged as The Simpsons, so for a moment I thought I had hallucinated it too.
Thank you! I went through all of the posts tagged with The Simpsons and attempted a search, but neither option worked. I am very grateful to you.
I found it by searching “monorail,” because I had erroneously remembered Mallory’s ranking of Simpsons songs as its own post rather than a comment & thought it might have been there. So essentially I used my poor memory to overcome my poor memory, which is actually really encouraging.
I have a performance meeting with my boss in a few hours and this did wonders calming my nerves. Thank you so much.
I used to have a mix cd that I burned (lol) on my old computer in middle school and it had this exact clip on it.

My second favorite Homer song after this are his brief bits of “Hitler was a Jerk” in Wild Barts Can’t Be Broken.
Happily singing doggerel alone in a stopped car: is there any greater joy?
There is not.
I love that every time Homer eats Pork Rinds, they are Pork Rinds Lite.
