“If you need a job and someone offers you a job, take the job. Working is better than not-working. Then, four years later, start your own media empire with someone you met on the Internet.”
I had a chat about working at a hyper-conservative think tank and thinking I looked good in men’s cargo shorts over at the Awl today.

When I told my grandfather I was interning at the Stanford Engineering Library, he gave me a dark look and said ominously: “Hoover.”
That was all he would say on the subject.
But you’re also going to tell us about being on Jeopardy!, right?
well, a video of Mallory on Jeopardy! is proving to be fairly elusive, so for now:

That vest. Marry me, Mallory.
Mallory is that vest from Express? I believe I seriously considered that same vest while working there in college but ultimately went with another.
You have done God’s work today.
Cabbages! Grace Kelly! Good showing.

I suppose it’s telling that I repeatedly read the title as “Going to Grad School and Taking Any Job You Can.”
Oh I know how it feels to have the school choice regret. I went to my home town university to be close to my family when my dad was sick, and while I wouldn’t give up the last few years with him for anything it still stings when I compare my opportunities to others. Clearly the answer is to start my own media empire with a stranger from the internet.
The phrase “compelling and butch” is compelling in itself

In all seriousness, I think that’s pretty good advice. ANY job can give you money and potentially valuable experience/contacts. If you’re embarrassed about it later, just leave it off your resume!
The more I find out about the people in my life, the more I find that they’ve all been on Jeopardy!.
Truth: no one looks good in men’s cargo shorts. Not even men.
One of my college friends seriously did look good in men’s cargo shorts. I really wanted to borrow her juuuust-on-the-adorable-side-of-butch style, and it took me a long time to admit that looking good in men’s cargo shorts is not my lot in life. I was comforted by the realization that that’s true for almost everybody.
I very recently took a job (in fact, yesterday was my first day), because “working is better than not-working”.
There is a lot more raw sewage in this job than I was led to believe.
I paid $31,000 in uni fees and have to get out of bed at 4:45a.m. for this??
I was once employed by a Baptist university that didn’t have a sexual harassment policy, but they did have a sexual misconduct policy that included the words homosexuality, adultery and fornication.
While the definition homosexuality is pretty obvious, I had to look up the difference between adultery and fornication to make sure I knew exactly what sins I was committing. I’m a proud fornicator, for those who were wondering.
A misconduct policy like that should be taken as a delightful challenge.
Oh I most certainly viewed it as a challenge and misconducted all over that place.

I too, have felt this. I went to Cedarville.
“I felt like an idiot sitting next to a bunch of Stanford and Ivy League grads when I’d gone to a really unimpressive school, and I felt like everyone around me had attended a seminar on success that I’d slept through and I’d never be able to catch up.”
