Toastrons of Canada! I’m currently ensconced a few miles outside of Portland, and tomorrow I continue my road trip up the western spine of the continent. Won’t those of you who live in Vancouver (CANADA NOT US) join me for a meetup on Thursday night?
We’re going to congregate at the Fountainhead Pub because someone suggested it to me and it looked fine and I don’t like deliberating over decisions. I still haven’t booked a hotel for that night yet. I’ll get around to it. Don’t crowd me. Shall we say 6:00–8:00ish? Fling suggestions at me in the comments.

Perianwen & KelizN, I also have a great deal of flexibility tomorrow *cough*unemployed*cough* and so could join up a bit earlier, help stake a claim for seating, etc. As I recall, the Fountainhead can be a bit miffy (sometimes) about table-hogging and it may help if there are several bodies present…
I’ve also messaged a woman I know who works there, to see about seating logistics. Haven’t heard back but if I do, I’ll let you know.

As a Winnipegger, I hate Vancouver for a lot of reasons (Vancouver evangelicals, stealing our hipsters, their unarguably superior weather, ugh too much fish), but now my hatred is ten fold. Whatever, I’ll have a toastie meetup by myself. My dog and I are gonna eat gummi candies and watch internet videos and NOT FEEL SAD ABOUT MISSING THIS AT ALL.

As a northern BCian, I also hate/seethe with jealousy about Vancouver. IT’S NOT ENOUGH THAT YOU HORDE ALL THE WARMTH, VANCOUVER, NOW YOU HAVE TO HORDE MALLORY. It’s fine, though. Totally fine. I’m not upset, you’re upset.

GODDAMMIT, SO CLOSE BUT YET SO FAR. I’m on a Spinster Holiday in Victoria to drink tea and go to museums and stuff my face with scones, but I am non-vehicular. Anybody coming from here? Can I get there with no car? Are they far away? I don’t know how to geography.
pretty sure you can take the ferry over and then bus from the ferry to downtown Vancouver! The whole journey might take 3+ hours though
You can totally do it without a car! But yes, 3+ hours total, each way. You could also take a sea-plane or the helijet which would be a 30 or so minute journey, maybe 45 – 60 door to door depending on where you are but for that you must be a Very Fancy Spinster.
72 or 70 bus to Swartz Bay
Ferry to Tsawwassen
620 bus to Bridgeport
Canada Line downtown (probably Yaletown/Roundhouse is closest to the Fountainhead)

But yes, a long journey. Nice weather for it though, ferrying through the Gulf Islands.
If you want to make it totally easy on yourself, public transit-wise, there’s Pacific Coach Lines – a fancy(er) bus that goes downtown Victoria to downtown Vancouver, including the ferry — eliminates complicated travel planning, but you pay more for the convenience. I looked just now and it’s $63 round trip, which is more than double the bare bones pricing of doing it yourself. However, as has been noted, it’s a lovely ferry ride and not a bad way to spend most of a summer day. I suck at links, sorry, but just go to the PCL website and it’s all there. As has also been mentioned above, the float plane and helijet option is pricy, but I still have amazing pics I took flying low over the islands last time I went that route — gorgeous! It’s a bit dear, but not ridiculously — about a hundred bucks each way — and quite an experience in and of itself. Adventure!
I live in Victoria! I’ve done the bus/ferry/bus daytrip to Vancouver a couple times now, and it is definitely 3+ hours each way but it’s also barely $17 each way and I enjoy reading/listening to podcasts/doing research while in transit.
The problem with an evening get-together is that the last ferry home to Victoria is at 9pm, so right now I am trying to decide between travelling ~7hrs total only to leave the bar at 7:30, or whether I am gonna spring for a hostel.
If you want a (friendly, misandrist, tragically Male but trans-ly so) travelling companion, though, email me and I can show you the ropes of a carless Vancouver trip!

I just got back home. Mallory was the greatest– I mean it you guys, she rotated around the tables and spent time with everybody and posed for pictures and dispensed hugs and was wildly funny and was wearing kick-ass eye-liner. Oh my god you guys Vancouver Toasties are THE BEST PEOPLE – I knew zero people going in and now I have like a dozen new friends. Somebody please remind me why I live in LA because Vancouver is CLEARLY SUPERIOR TO EVERYWHERE, you guys have the best random internet strangers!
