The return of the Secretaries in: “Is He?”
Some stray observations:
1. Can you believe we’ve been running Kids in the Hall Monday on and off for six months now and this is only the second Secretaries sketch we’ve done yet?
2. Bruce McCullough had enchanting calves.
3. There are so many wonderful little details to love here, Scott Thompson’s chunky necklace chief among them. These guys treated drag with respect. There’s a lot of love for the way a middle-aged, not-too-well-off woman who wants to look her best for work would dress herself in this scene.
4. Scott’s got a poster of a clean-cut, good-looking man hung up on the wall just behind him and I can’t for the life of me figure out who it is. I want to say Tom Skerritt, but I know that’s wrong.
5. The way Bruce sighs at the end of a particularly unpleasant sentence. “Work. [hyahhh]”
6. Scott’s Kathy is clearly Monk #2 to Bruce’s Monk #1. Joan Holloway could learn a great deal from Scott’s Kathy, come to think of it.
7. “I’m so full of beans today.”
8. “He’s biiiiii. Worst-case scenario.”
9. Do all Canadians say pasta that way? “Pahst-tah?” Oh, I miss Nicole already.
10. That cheer at the end is both earned and deserved. God bless those secretaries. Even Tanya the Temp.

I thought that was Mel Gibson in the poster. Am I totally off base?
I was just coming down to say I think it is Mel Gibson, too.
I love the one behind Bruce because it is one of Mark’s dirtbag characters.
There’s a phenomenal sketch of them talking about each other.
Ha! You are right. I forgot about that sketch.
I was thinkign Top-Gun era Tom Cruise? Face looks the wrong shape for Gibson.
I do not know how to embed so here is a link to what I think is the picture of Mel from Bird on a Wire.

Yep, I was just going to post this myself.
Yes that is it! But I think that is a still from The River.
You are probably right. I was just looking up movies from around 1990 and that picture came up for Bird on a Wire.
Mark’s dirtbags are The Best Dirtbags.
Mississippi Gary!
Who CARES about the OTHER photo…MISSISSIPPI GARY!!!!!
I’m guessing it’s Tom Cruise in a Top Gun still. Still, it’s hard to say!
Kathy’s so bold. Those men, proving it to her *during*.
And it’s not even Friday!

“Can you believe we’ve been running Kids in the Hall Monday on and off for six months now and this is the only Secretaries sketch we’ve done yet?”
False! You did the one about replacing the coffee with decaf! IT WAS VERY IMPORTANT
I watched that sketch about three times a day, every day that week when it was posted, and laughed hysterically every time (beaten only by the “Trapper” sketch in my affections.) The perfectly sharp way Dave Foley recites “Kathy, I like you. You’re fast on the keyboard, but you can be replaced” is especially wonderful.
“Worst-case scenario” –> lol for eternity
You DID do a secretaries one, I swear because it was that one where Dave Foley switches out the regular coffee for decaf and Scott says “Bitch are you for real?!” Maybe I imagined it? Maybe it wasn’t tagged properly?

Yes, I was right.
I KNEW I WAS GOING TO MESS UP AS SOON AS NICOLE LEFT, I mean to say “second” but then I never came back and finished that sentence! NICOOOOLE DON’T LOOK AT ME
That is absolutely how Canadians from Southern Ontario say “pasta”. How does the rest of the world say it?
Mmhmm, totally normal pronounciation for (at least?) S. Ontario.
Pasta like Rasta, not pah-sta like faster.
So, wait. Non-Canadians say “faster” as “fah-ster?”
“Paw-sta”, closer to how it is pronounced in Italian. (Though by the “rest of the world” I mean the U.S. In the U.K. it’s usually pronounced about how it’s pronounced in the sketch, but I also find that in the U.K. most foreign acquisition words are said in an aggressively English-y way.)
All of my Canadian family in Ontario pronounce it this way, and they also call macaroni and cheese Craft Dinner, so you can’t really trust them to know what they’re doing.
It’s Kraft Dinner.
Holy cheesus, you’re right!
For some context, this is great: http://thewalrus.ca/manufacturing-taste/
I’m so happy KITHM are back.
I love how haphazard and layered the cubicles are – misaligned labels on the binders, work notices and photos and everything overlapping on the walls. It’s great set work, except for how few files are in the filing cabinet.
I too consider my sexual orientation to be “sexual scientist”.
“Hello, I’m laldagorth, and I was wondering if you’d want to help me with a very scientific experiment I’m working on. What’s that? Oh, yes, it’s definitely legitimate; it’s my life’s work.”
This would probably work, right? Who doesn’t want to be a part of the scientific community? You’re HELPING people!
I’m more an adventurer-type myself. Dora The Sexual Explorer.
Hola.
Or in England: “Dor – er, the Sexual Explorer.”
The English. Not American.
This is just to say that when I was in elementary school I would watch Comedy Central when I was home alone sick and I clearly remember Buddy Love as my earliest encounter with “gay”.
Is this a good place to squee about how I got to see Dave Foley last weekend?
Oh my god, my grandma says she’s “full of beans” all the time.

I tink the pic is of Treat Williams. This dates me fairly accurately.
I think their drag is so good because I once heard them say in an interview that they weren’t dressing as ladies to be silly (like “haha, a dude in a dress”); they were dressing as ladies because they had female characters and they were an all-male troop so they had to play the women themselves. They were trying to really embody these women, not just throw on heels for a gag.
I look forward to your treatment of a Manservant Hecubus skit. “Eeevil!”
I say “full of beans” all the time and no one knows what I’m talking about. I got it from that sketch about the monkeys.
