Is it too off topic to mention that Here I Stand is an amazing board game about the Protestant Reformation?

In Assassin’s Creed: Athanasian Creed, you flash back to the fourth century and play as the follower of Athanasius who poisoned Arius, but you get to kill him only after 50 gameplay hours of complicated biblical exegesis minigames revolving around whether it’s possible to be both coeternal and begotten.

      I love* you.

*Please see the footnotes as to whether the term being translated as “love” is agape, phileo or eros.

I’ve still giggling about “Assassin’s Creed: Nicene Creed” 14 hours later. I’ve been trying to come up with one for the Edict of Nantes, but the best I can do is “Psychohuguenots”.

Crusader Kings 2 (a real game, I swear) stops a little short of Martin Luther, but you can kick off the Reformation early by championing Catharism, Fraticellism, Waldensianism, or Lollardy. Plus, if you’re playing as the Byzantine Emperor, you can mend the Great Schism by restoring the patriarchs of Alexandria, Jerusalem and Antioch and taking Rome. This confirms Orthodoxy as the one legitimate form of Christianity, instantly turning every Catholic noble in Europe into a heretic. Good times!

The game continues the fun in Europa Universalis 4. Lollards. Hussites. Calvinists. Lutherans. Oh! The joys of heresy and schism abound! And not just only in the Holy Roman Empire. It is a globe-spanning game of excommunication, jihad, conversion of the natives, Reformation, Counter Reformation and, hopefully, eventually, Enlightenment.

It’s a 4X strategic simulation, not an FPS, but if you want to feel the torture, disgust, hope, passion, and cynicism of the era, the random events of Europa Universalis should be grist for the mental mill in all of us. Or, I should say, the John Stuart Mill in all of us.

The Rule of the Saints sounds like an actual game but it was a period in Scottish history with just ALL the religious murder. As opposed to slaughter on other grounds (which was every other time)

Call of Duty: Defenestration of Prague

Half Life: The Stake of Jan Hus

    World of Christendomcraft

The final boss is Jezebel. Dogs are waiting at the bottom.

I honestly think Jezebel is one of the most badass characters in the Bible. If she’d been an Israelite princess battling a Phoenician prophet, she’d probably have two books named after her.

    Dragon Age of Enlightenment

Though I mean we are already actually getting Dragon Age: (Spanish) Inquisition.

(Neither of those have to do with the Reformation; I am the worst former Lutheran.)

Zelda: A Link to the Apostolic Fathers
    Super Wesley Brothers 3
    WINECRAFT
    Sim City 1517
    LEGO Vatican Council
    Resident Evil Leo X
    Heretic Crush Saga
    Words and Sacraments with Friends

    1. JGlo +11

Super Wesley Brothers 1 was mostly about their failure to defeat American Bowser. By the time they get to the third one, you can also play as Asbury and Coke.

Per a friend of mine, when I shared this link on FB:

“I actually spent like 10 hours playing a board game about the Wars of the Reformation (twice). By far the nerdiest thing I’ve ever done. Last time I played Henry VIII and got beat out by the Papacy and the Hapsburgs because I couldn’t roll high enough on my wives’ pregnancy chart to have a legitimate male heir. Really. http://www.gmtgames.com/nnhis/main.html

    […]

    That was probably an overshare.”

Finally. Now we’ll be able to focus on exegesis in video games journalism. #GamerPearlyGaters

    Sigh. So, kind of relatedly?

The game I (still) really want is a King Lear RPG called “King Fear: Lord of the Sword.” It would be loosely based off of Nahum Tate’s History of King Lear. And you can play as Cordelia, obv, and NEVER DIE.

    Deus Ex: Protestant Revolution
    Supreme Pope: Divine Mandate
    Hotline Vatican City
Super Altar Boy (this one actually makes me feel kind of terrible on a number of levels)
    Prince of Peace and Persia
    MYST(ery of Faith)
    Hitman Chi Rho: Judas
    Rise of the Trinity

And for some real obscure art game references:
    MITRE
    Antisanctuary
    Revenge of the Teutons
    Hail Mary
    Wheel within a Wheel-filled Sky
    LIMBO
    PXPXPXPXPXPX

…This may be less relevant to the Protestant wars of Reformation and more a straight mash-up of my Steam library and a Catholic upbringing… Not sorry?

There really should be a video game set in the Hussite Wars, following the incredible campaign of Jan Zizka. You can train armies of fanatical peasants and outfit them to take down armies of crusading knights. Cannons, wagons, and lots and lots of consecrated wine.

We need to find a Czech company willing to make such a game. Cause it’s not happening anywhere else.

Score by Smetana, Dvorak, and Janacek of course. Man I’m geeking out.

The night before my PhD exams started, I dreamed about an English Reformation Pac-Man. Pac-Man Cranmer ran around eating pellets in a Winchester Cathedral maze and avoiding Mary, Pole, and Gardiner.
