Mallory, please publish a book just on Rizzo. She is my role model in all things

Can I tell you how many times I have read “The Big Bang Theory And Feelings I Forgot I’d Had About Straight Girls” because it is a lot of times and I have Feelings every single time and ugh ugh this site is so perfect.

YES. Now whenever BBT comes up I think of Mallory’s final line “It’s not a very good show; I don’t think you should watch it.” That is also how I feel about Once Upon a Time, which I somehow keep returning to.

Well I know what I’m doing the rest of today!

More seriously—writing FFs for Game of Thrones and Bend It Like Beckham felt like fulfilling my one true destiny in life, so thank you to The Toast for being a place I could do that.

I looved FF Bend it Like Beckham, so thank you for writing it.

I haven’t seen the movie, but your observation about looking back and wondering how the hell you missed the queer signals really resonated with me. I’m a bi woman married to a man and when your article came out I was in the middle of a crisis because I realised I’d accidentally kind of gone back into the closet after 12+ years of marriage. So I was trying to figure out who I was and wanting to be more visibly queer and find community and at the same time worrying that I wasn’t queer enough. And I remember that your article just resonated – because I had that revelation when I was 20 or 21 – and it, I don’t know, reassured me that I am queer and I did have a community here at The Toast.

Same. I came out as bi two years ago now, and spent a lot of time wondering how on earth I could have missed it. That post meant a lot to me.

The Root/Shaw Femslash is the reason I started watching Person of Interest–which is a delight! if a grim and vaguely unsettling one–and I really enjoyed re-reading the post now that I’m caught up through Season 4.

AND re-reading the comment section turned up a link to a delightful Noelle Stevenson drawing of Root and Shaw, which in turn led me to all of her posts on POI, which in turn led me to the gifset I’ve been looking for since I watched If-Then-Else:
    greeting
    overly affectionate greeting
    transparent rationale for conversation

    annoyed attempt to deflect subtext
    overt come-on
mildly embarrassed defensiveness bordering on hostility
    playfully witty sign-off

    1. emfreeburg +24

That was the first thing anybody ever paid me to write, so I guess it changed mine too! Glad you liked it 😀

This may be overly-earnest but I’m saying it anyway: I read the Jane Eyre femslash post at a time when I was feeling alone in the world, and when I had finished reading it I realized I was not, that somewhere out there, there were people like me.

And ever since then I have kept it bookmarked on my phone, and when I read “(how old were you, by the way, when you found out how St. John is pronounced? How badly did it shake you?)” I know you’re all out there.

I refuse to watch/read any more Game of Thrones because it messes up the canon in my head that the Sansa/Brienne post has become.

Whoa, I’m on this list!!!! Also, Jane/Petra forever. I know she recently got married to a man but it’s only a matter of TIME before she starts dating Petra on the side

So many feelings. Femslash Friday is one of my favorite series and it’s one of the series that made The Toast became my community rather than just another blog with interesting / funny articles.

I wrote some of this upthread as a reply to emfreeburg about Bend it Like Beckham, but wanted to put it in it’s own comment because it’s true for all of FF.

I’m a bi woman married to a man and when I wandered over to the toast, I was in the middle of a crisis because I realised I’d accidentally kind of gone back into the closet after 12+ years of marriage. So I was trying to figure out who I was and wanting to be more visibly queer and find community and at the same time worrying that I wasn’t queer enough. And then I read different FF pieces and other queer content here and they resonated and I don’t know, it reassured me that I am queer enough. And finding other bi Toasties was so incredibly helpful. I’m still working on how to be more visible, but I’m in a much more comfortable place right now, and some of that is because of the toast.

Also, The Devil Wears Prada and Sex in the City are two of my favorite FFs not listed. But I love them all, even the ones I haven’t read yet.

Some beautiful toastie soul RUINED MY LIFE by posting a link to the epic fanfic Truth and Measure on the Devil Wears Prada post and I can never thank them enough.

    Skimmons forever!

    Also Cartinelli (Peggy Carter/Angie Martinelli).

Thank you so much for this series. I remember being a wee high schooler who had not yet admitted to myself that I was bisexual and desperately searching for f/f ships in various fandoms. This series comforts me as both that high schooler and as an adult bisexual woman in a heterosexual marriage who all too frequently is seen as straight.

It is almost staggering how much more femslashy Jane and Petra’s relationship has gotten since that article was written.

  12. StarFootSneech +5

I had to log in and post. It was basically a combination of Femslash Friday and my super duper crush on Tricia Helfer that helped me realize that I’m bi. Thank you for that.

So many of these are so good but I think Lara Croft is my favorite because I already strongly felt that Lara and Sam were a couple after I played the game. That article really spoke to my heart.

Oh man, the Mean Girls one. It explained so much of my high school breakdown to me. She was my Jessica! My therapist even asked me if she was my Jessica (although her phrasing was “do you think you might be in love with [x]?”! I rejected that explanation. That was totally the right explanation.

  14. tidepool +5

Oh man, that Alex and Olivia one led me back to 272 Views of Law & Order SVU, which is one of the greatest pieces of horror fiction ever.

I am going to miss Femslash Friday so much. One of my greatest regrets is that I hadn’t watched enough of Veronica Mars when that particular FF was posted so I could join in the discussions in the comments. (Have now watched the whole thing; Veronica and Mac are a far better pairing than Veronica and any of her boyfriends, and I will brook no argument.)

Also, every now and again I will go back to the Kaylee/Inara piece and laugh to myself again while reading it. Some favourite bits:

      – like the angels in heaven, he neither gives nor is given in marriage.

      – “Ah, Kaylee,” he has never said. “How good to see you, and your breasts. Let us kiss each other with our mouths, now; me with my man’s mouth, and you with your mouth that is a woman’s mouth.”

–And yet each of his scenes with Jayne are like watching an old Spencer Tracy/Katharine Hepburn film. 90% of their dialogue could be replaced with “You damned brute. You awful, dirty, monstrous ape of a man, you [pounds ineffectually on chest with fists]. I hate you. I simply can’t stand you” and “Shut your pretty mouth [rough kiss]” and the show would have been substantially improved by it.

Also, this comment quite genuinely makes me laugh out loud every time I remember it:

I actually thought Kaylee was gay for a while. In that first episode, Jayne makes a joke to Simon about how Kaylee “wishes you were a gynecologist” or something like that, but the first time I heard it I thought he said “Kaylee here wishes she were a gynecologist!” So that whole Simon thing was a really rude awakening for me.

Turbulence by Lyn Gala is an m/m space opera with a Jayne-like character – it’s not exactly fanfic, but it was inspired by a reader submitted photo of Jayne.

I brandish the Rory/Paris Femslash Friday at anyone anytime Gilmore Girls and/or the inane conversation of which of Rory’s boyfriends was best comes up (actually a lot, I have excellent friends) as the trump card for any Rory relationship dilemma. My fingers are crossed that the reboot alludes to it in some way.

I loved this whole series. It’s been one of my favorite things about The Toast. (OK, I have many favorite things about The Toast, but this is one of them.)

Femslash Friday made me smile like a loon even when I felt desperately sad. I truly believe that the Rory/Paris and the bend it like beckham one changed my life. Oh toast, why do you have to leave?

As of a couple of months ago I could probably write thousands of words on Steven Universe. I feel like I’ve arrived at the promised land of femslash. We have ship wars about f/f ships. IT’S GLORIOUS and you’re all invited.

(Yes it is a kids’ cartoon, but all the characters in question are hundreds or thousands of years old and are aliens anyway, plus the show just has a surprising amount of depth and the characters are all really interesting, so there.)
